[f. Gr. αὐτ-ός self + ἄκ-ος remedy + -oid.]
(Of, pertaining to, or designating) a drug-like substance produced by the organs of internal secretion.
1914E. A. S. Schäfer in Internat. Congr. Med. 1913 ii. ii. 21 A convenient Greek derivative to denote this quality is ‘acoid’..and to further denote that these principles are formed within and by the body, i.e. are natural, we may employ the prefix ‘aut-’. We thus get the complete expression autacoid substance to denote any druglike principle which is produced in or can be extracted from the internally secreting organs.1928Daily Express 6 July 6 These are chemical substances of a drug-like character distributed by the circulation of the blood, to act where they are needed upon various organs and tissues. They are best referred to as ‘autacoids’... Among the best known of the autacoid substances are adrenaline..thyroxine..insulin.
