The study of extinct organized beings; that department of geology or of biology which treats of fossil animals and plants; often confined to that of extinct animals (palæozoology).
1838Lyell Elem. Geol. ii. xiii. 281 note, Palæontology is the science which treats of fossil remains, both animal and vegetable. 1851Richardson Geol. viii. (1855) 207 Palæontology may be defined to be the science of fossil animals. 1857H. Miller Test. So palæontoˈlogic, -ical adjs., pertaining to palæontology; relating to extinct organisms; hence palæontoˈlogically adv., in relation to palæontology; palæonˈtologist, one versed in palæontology.
