[a. G. dopa (B. Bloch 1917, in Arch. f. Dermatol. und Syphilis CXXIV. 132), f. the initial letters of the formative elements of dioxyphenylalanine, a former name of the compound.]
3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine, C9H11NO4, a crystalline amino-acid which occurs naturally (not as a constituent of proteins) and is used in the treatment of Parkinsonism; in man it is a precursor of noradrenaline and of melanin, being formed by the oxidation of tyrosine in the nerves and adrenal medulla.
