Apgar, n. Med.|ˈæpgə| [The name of Virginia Apgar (1909–74), U.S. anaesthesiologist, who proposed this method of assessment in 1953 (Current Res. Anesthesia & Analgesia XXXII. 267).] Apgar score, a measure of the physical condition of a newborn infant, obtained by adding points (2, 1, or 0) given for heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, response to stimulation, and skin coloration, a score of ten representing the best possible condition.
