A green crystalline substance, C15H12N2O5, obtained from gallic acid and used as a bluish-violet mordant dye for wool and cotton and in calico-printing; also, any of a group of structurally similar dyes of the oxazine series that are derived from gallic acid.
1883H. Kœchlin in Chem. News 13 Apr. 170/1 By allowing an alcoholic solution of nitroso-dimethylaniline hydrochlorate to react in heat upon the tannins, as upon gallic acid, there are obtained violet colouring-matters, verging more or less upon a blue according to the nature of the tannin employed. These colouring-matters..the author names gallo-cyanines. 1893E. Knecht et al. Man. Dyeing II. vii. 624 Gallocyanin yields a bright blue-violet shade, which resists light, soap, and acids very well, but is not fast to soda. 1956Hickinbottom & Garwood in E. H. Rodd Chem.
