The name of August Paul Wassermann (1866–1925), German bacteriologist, used attrib. with reference to a test for syphilis devised by him in 1906, in which antibodies to the causative organism are detected by a complement-fixation test. Also absol., the Wassermann test.
1909Jrnl. Exper. Med. XI. 392 Unless a great simplification of the Wassermann test can be devised, it will never attain the usefulness which it really deserves.
