1867Wharton Law-Lexicon (ed. 4) 647/2 Nominativus pendens, a nominative case grammatically unconnected with the rest of the sentence in which it stands. 1926Fowler Mod. Eng. Usage 611/2 Nominativus pendens.., ‘hanging nominative’. A form of anacoluthon in which a sentence is begun with what appears to be the subject, but before the verb is reached something else is substituted in word or in thought, & the supposed subject is left in the air. 1929C.
