[Identical with OF. baudetrot: Godefroy, s.v., quotes ‘pronuba, baudetrot,’ from a Latin-French glossary of 13th c. This, with the Eng. forms, indicates an earlier OF. baldestrot, baudestrot, the first element of which appears to be bald, baud ‘bold, forward, lively, gay’ (see baude); the second suggests the Teutonic strutt, strut. (Cant names have been frequent for the class of persons in question.) This is probably the full word from which bawd was shortened; the form bawstrop seems to be the origin of the word bronstrops, a procuress, which is frequent in Middleton's comedies.]
