[named after H. W. M. Olbers (1758–1840), German astronomer, who propounded it in Astron. Jahrb. (1826) 110.]
The paradox that if stars were distributed evenly (in sufficient numbers) throughout an infinite static universe, the sky should be as bright at night as in the daytime, owing to the fact that whilst the apparent brightness of individual stars decreases with distance the number of stars increases in the same proportion.
