Native sesquioxide of iron (Fe2O3), an abundant and widely distributed iron ore, occurring in various forms (crystalline, massive, or granular); in colour, red, reddish-brown, or blackish with a red streak. (Sometimes distinguished as red hæmatite: cf. b.)
