Any of various basic substances or mixtures obtained by partial hydrolysis of proteins and thought at one time to be the kernel or nucleus of the proteins from which they were derived; also used with prefix indicating the protein, as glutokyrine.
1903Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXXXIV. i. 587 The protamines of fish spermatozoa are possibly formed by the polymerisation or condensation of kyrine or similar decomposition products of the proteids. 1928Physiol. Rev. VIII. 408 The close resemb[l]ance of these preparations to each other in properties and composition led him [sc. Siegfried] to suggest the generic name kyrine for them with the implication that they were the kernel, or nucleus, of the molecular structure of the proteins from which they were derived.
