a. An enzyme found in the human pancreas and elsewhere in the body, which releases kallidin from a plasma precursor and has been used therapeutically as a vasodilator and hypotensive agent.
1930Chem. Abstr. XXIV. 4541 The name callicrein, taken from a Greek synonym for pancreas, is proposed for this circulatory hormone. 1956Robson & Keele Recent Adv. Pharmacol. (ed. 2) xiv. 480 Kallidin is formed by the proteolytic action of a widely distributed (in saliva, serum, urine, pancreas, etc.) enzyme called Kallikrein, which under the name Padutin has been used therapeutically. 1967Martindale's Extra Pharmacopoeia (ed. 25) 1440 Kallikrein is a dilator of the peripheral blood-vessels...
