before a vowel pœcil-, from Gr. ποικίλο-ς many-coloured, variegated, various, a formative element in scientific terms (in some of which the form poikilo- is preferred).
ˈpœciloblast, ˈpœcilocyte: see poikilo-; ˈpœcilomere [Gr. µέρος part], a part of the body of an animal in which variations of colouring tend to appear first; ˈpœcilonym [Gr. ὄνοµα, ὄνυµα name], one of various names for the same thing; a synonym (Cent. Dict. cites Wilder); hence pœciloˈnymic a., having a variety of names; pœciˈlonymy; ˈpœcilopod [Gr. πούς, ποδ- foot] Zool., a member of the Pœcilopoda, in Latreille's classification (now abandoned), a division of Crustacea distinguished by limbs of varied form and functions, e.g. prehensory, ambulatory, branchial, and natatory; hence pœciˈlopodous a.; pœciloˈthermal, pœciloˈthermic: see poikilo-.
