A large hood originally worn while riding, but in later use forming an article of out-door costume for women and children.
Now chiefly familiar from the tale of Little Red Riding-hood, which occurs in the English translation of C. Perrault's Histoires ou Contes du Tems Passé by R. S[amber], 1729.
