a. = yes, sir s.v. sir n. 8 c.
b. A formula of assent to a superior. Occas. as n., a quick utterance of ‘yes, sir’. Cf. nossir.
There is much variation in the placing of the main stress in both the ordinary use and in the verbal forms.
