alkapton Med.|ælˈkæptɒn| Also alcapton. [a. G. (C. Boedeker 1861, in Ann. d. Chemie u. Pharm. CXVII. 101), f. alkali + Gr. κάπτον, neut. pres. pple. of κάπτειν to swallow greedily.] A reducing substance which causes urine, left standing, to turn dark through oxidation. Also attrib. Hence alkaptoˈnuria [-uria], the disease in which this substance is present; alkaptoˈnuric a. and n.
