A red water-buck or antelope (Cobus vardoni) found in southern Central Africa.
1881[see lechwe]. 1890in Cent. Dict. 1893F. C. Selous Trav. S.E. Africa 245, I saw three roan antelopes and a few pookoos (Cobus vardoni). 1894Lydekker Royal Nat. Hist. II. 304 The puku is about the size of the pala, standing some 3 feet 3 inches at the shoulder. 1900W. L. Sclater Mammals S. Afr. I. 193 The flesh of the puku is stated by Selous to be even more nauseous and unpalatable than that of the common water-buck. 1946,1972[see lechwe]. 1973D. Steele Game Sanctuaries S.
