[In F. pantin, formerly pantine (‘une jatte de Saxe, une pantine de Boucher’, Diderot Promenade du Sceptique, 1747–9), which some French etymologists have referred to Pantin a village near Paris; but see quot. 1748.] A pasteboard figure of a human being, having the neck, body, and limbs jointed, so as to move when pulled by a thread or wire: a fashionable toy in the middle of the 18th c.
