1. The action of filling up crevices in dried clay by means of free-flowing mud; also, the mud so used.
1852J. Wiggins Embanking 19 As these spits contract in drying, the crevices outside are therefore filled with mud, which is called ‘sludging’. a1877Knight Dict. Mech. III. 2217/1 Sludging, stopping the crevices incident to the contraction of clay piled in embankments, by mud sufficiently fluid to run freely. 1940Chambers's Techn. 2. The formation or deposition of sludge, esp. in oil.
