[Orig. coined as F. kelline (I. Mustapha 1879, in Compt. Rend. LXXXIX. 442), f. kell, given as the Arabic name of Ammi visnaga; the h originated with Samaan (1931), who gave the Arabic name as khella: see -in1.]
A tricyclic crystalline compound, C14H12O5, obtained from the fruit of the North African umbelliferous plant Ammi visnaga and formerly used in the treatment of angina pectoris.
The name was orig. given to the glucoside of this compound.
1879Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XXXVI. 1041 The author proposes for this glucoside the name kellin, from the Arabic name of the Ammi Visnaga. 1931K. Samaan in Q. Jrnl. Pharmacy IV. 14 Ibrahim Mostapha described a crystalline principle which he named Khellin. 1938Chem. Abstr. XXXII. 2120 Fantl and Salem..obtained from the fruits of Ammi visnaga a compd., kellin, C14H12O5. 1947Lancet 26 Apr. 557/2 Khellin causes a conspicuous and long relaxation of all the visceral smooth muscle—the intestines, uterus, bile-ducts, bronchi, and especially ureters. Ibid., In 1945 a fresh interest in khellin arose as the result of the discovery that it acts as an extremely potent coronary vasodilator which, in doses used, has no effect on the general blood-pressure and does not increase the oxygen requirements of the heart. 1957M. Plotz Coronary Heart Dis. xvii. 301/2 Favorable results with khellin therapy in man have been reported by many investigators. Ibid., The most important factor limiting the use of khellin orally has been the high incidence of toxic reactions. 1964To-Day's Drugs (B.M.A.) 132 Khellin had a brief period of popularity about ten years ago, but when the drug was evaluated by controlled clinical trials and by objective methods it was found that it was no better than a placebo. |
