The compound 10-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)phenothiazine, C₁₇H₂₀N₂S, which is used (in the form of its white crystalline hydrochloride) as a tranquillizer.

Assoc. 5 May 45/1 Treatment with promazine satisfactorily relieved the withdrawal symptoms of acute alcoholic intoxication in all patients who remained in the hospital for the complete course of therapy.1958Martindale's Extra Pharmacopœia (ed. 24) 398 Promazine has actions similar to those of chlorpromazine. It has been used for its tranquillising effect in psychotic conditions, especially those associated with hyperactivity, in acute alcoholism and delirium tremens, and in the withdrawal symptoms of drug addiction.1965J.
