a. A lightweight crossbow designed to shoot stones or bullets rather than bolts; cf. arbalest n. and stone-bow n. Obs. exc. Hist.
b. The bow or bow assembly of a modern crossbow.
The MS should prob. be interpreted as reading ‘[components of] Crosbows called Rodds’, in which case the first sense is not based on historical evidence.
1786Grose Armour & Weapons 59 There were two sorts of English cross bows, one called Latches, the other Prodds. 1824Meyrick Ant. Armour III. 48 The prodd was found as suitable for casting bullets as the barreled cross-bow. 1960H. Hayward Antique Coll. 88/2 A light version of the cross-bow fitted with a sling to fire bullets or stones, and known as a prodd or stone-bow, was much used from medieval times onwards for shooting small game. 1965F.
