A dinosaur of the genus Scelidosaurus, the typical genus of the family Scelidosauridæ of stegosaurian herbivorous dinosaurs. Hence ˌscelidoˈsaurian a., of or pertaining to the Scelidosauridæ; n., a scelidosaurian reptile. ˌscelidoˈsauriform a. = next. ˌscelidoˈsauroid a., pertaining to or characteristic of the Scelidosauridæ; n., a scelidosauroid reptile.
1861Owen Monogr. Fossil Reptilia Liassic Format. i. 5 It most probably formed part of a very young or fœtal Scelidosaur. 1869Huxley in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. XXVI. 44, I think it will be proper to restrict the name Palæosaurus to the latter (or Megalosauroid) form of tooth, and to use Thecodontosaurus for the former (or Scelidosauroid) type.
