Stanton|ˈstæntən| [Name of Sir Thomas Edward Stanton (1865–1931), English engineer.] Stanton number, a dimensionless measure of heat transfer used in forced convection studies, equivalent to the ratio of the Nusselt number to the product of the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers, viz. h/cpρv, where h is the heat transfer coefficient of the fluid, cp is its heat capacity at constant pressure, ρ is its density, and v is its velocity. Defined as the reciprocal of the Prandtl number in some dictionaries, but no textual evidence for this has been found.
1942W. H. McAdams Heat Transmission (ed. 2) iv. 95 Stanton number. 1966W. M. Kays Convective Heat & Mass Transfer xi. 248 The decrease in Stanton number noted here occurs in what still seems to be essentially a turbulent boundary layer. 1978Internat. Jrnl. Heat & Mass Transfer XXI. 282/2 From the results for the Nusselt number, the dimensionless heat transfer, expressed as the Stanton number, can be determined: St = Nu/Re Pr. |
