1704J. Harris Lex. Techn., Madrier, in Fortification, is a thick Plank arm'd with Plates of Iron, and having a Concavity sufficient to receive the Mouth of the Petard when charged, with which it is applied against a Gate, or any thing else that you design to break down. This term is also appropriated to certain flat Beams, which are fix'd at the bottom of a Moat, to support a Wall. There are also Madriers lined with Tin, which are cover'd with Earth, to serve as a Defence against Artificial Fires. 1758J. Watson Milit. Dict.
