‖ saron|ˈsɑːrɒn| [Javanese.] An Indonesian musical instrument, normally having seven bronze bars which are struck with a stick.
1817T. S. Raffles Hist. Java I. viii. 470 The sáron.., the démong.., and selántam.., are staccátos of metallic bars, and a sort of bells placed on a frame. They contain a regular diatonic scale, and nearly two octaves. 1940C. Sachs Hist. Mus. Instruments (1942) xii. 239 The Javanese saron cannot have been constructed much earlier than 900 a.d. The modern saron has a wooden resonance box which frequently is carved in the shape of a crouching dragon... Sarons are constructed in four main sizes an octave apart. 1961[see metallophone s.v. metallo-]. 1964S. Marcuse Mus. Instruments 457/1 Saron, metallophone of Bali and Java, first depicted at Borobudur (ca. 800). In modern sarons the bars are set above a wooden trough resonator. |
