tomatillo, n. orig. and chiefly U.S. (tɒməˈtiːljəʊ, ‖ tomaˈtiʎo) [a. Sp., dim. of tomate tomato n.] Any of various edible fruits resembling a small tomato, esp. the purplish fruit of the ground cherry Physalis ixocarpa, native to Mexico and the southern United States.
