[The name of Ernst Abbe (1840–1905), German physicist, introducer or popularizer of the instruments and concepts.
The form Abbé (with pronunc. |ˈæbeɪ|) prob. arises from a misconception that the name is French.]
Used attrib. and in the possessive to designate optical instruments and concepts relating to optical theory, as Abbe condenser, a condenser for compound microscopes in the form of a wide-aperture compound lens; Abbe number, the reciprocal of the dispersive power of a substance; Abbe refractometer, an instrument for directly determining the refractive index of a small sample of liquid.
