[a. F. Huguenot, a word of disputed origin; according to Hatz.-Darm. (who cites the form eiguenots from Chron. de Genève of 1550), a popular alteration of Ger. eidgenosz (Du. eedgenoot), confederate, under the influence of the personal name Hugues, Hugh.]
A member of the Calvinistic or Reformed communion of France in the 16th and 17th c.; a French Protestant. In French, orig. a nickname, said to have been imported from Geneva; in English, chiefly a historical term.
