The name of Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826), Bavarian optician and physicist, used attrib. or in the possessive to designate certain phenomena investigated by him, as Fraunhofer('s) diffraction, diffraction in which the diffraction pattern is a linear function of the variation in phase across the diffracting aperture or object; Fraunhofer('s) lines, the dark lines in the spectra of the sun and other stars; Fraunhofer spectrum, a solar or stellar spectrum containing Fraunhofer lines.
