[ad. L. amphimacrus, a. Gr. ἀµϕίµακρος long at both ends, subst. the foot so called; f. ἀµϕί on both sides + µακρός long. Cf. Fr. amphimacre.]
In Greek and Latin prosody, a foot consisting of a short between two long syllables, as cārĭtās. Sometimes applied in modern prosody to words like multitude, runaway.
