The name of Hugo Schiff (1834–1915), German chemist, used attrib. and in the possessive to designate things he devised or investigated, as Schiff('s) base, any organic compound having the structure R1R2C{b2}NR3; Schiff('s) reaction, the action of aldehydes of restoring the magenta colour to Schiff's reagent; Schiff('s) reagent, an acid solution of fuchsin (magenta, rosaniline) decolorized by sulphur dioxide or potassium metabisulphite; Schiff('s) test, the Schiff reaction employed as a test for aldehydes.
