The surname of Jonathan Plott (fl. 1750–80) and his descendants, used attrib. in Plott hound to designate a hunting dog belonging to a breed developed by this family from hounds brought from Germany to North Carolina in 1750, characterized by a smooth, dark brown coat, often with a black saddle or white feet, and large, drooping ears; it has long been used for bear and boar hunting in North Carolina and Tennessee, and recently the breed has become more widely known.
