A glassy variety of orthoclase, found in flat crystals (Chester).
1815Aikin Man. Min. (ed. 2) 197 Glassy Felspar. Sanidin. 1849J. Nicol Man. Min. 121 The glassy felspar or sanadine is by some considered a distinct species. 1867Brande & Cox Dict. Sci., etc., Sanidine,..a name given to Glassy Felspar, on account of the tabular form of its crystals.
Hence saniˈdinic a., containing sanidine. ˈsanidinite, a rock consisting largely of sanidine.
