An evergreen tree of Chile, Peumus boldus; also, a medicinal preparation of the leaves of this tree, formerly used as a tonic.

Hence ˈboldin [-in1], a glucoside having hypnotic properties found in the boldo; ˈboldine (also † boldeine, † boldina) [a. F. boldine (Bourgoin & Verne 1872, in Jrnl. de Pharm. et de Chim. XVI. 191): see -ine5], a bitter, light-sensitive alkaloid, C19H21O4N, found in the boldo and formerly used as a hypnotic; boldoˈglucin = boldin.
