[F., a low foul-mouthed woman, a market-woman, fem. of obs. poissard pickpocket, rogue, f. poix pitch + -ard, because things ‘stick to his fingers’; also a fishwife (by association with poisson fish).]
A French-woman of the lowest class, esp. one of the Parisian market-women, who led riots during the first revolution.
