A formative analogous to tribromo-, expressing the substitution of three atoms of chlorine for hydrogen, as in trichlorobenzene, C6H3Cl3; so trichloracetic acid, CCl3.CO2H, etc. Also triˌchloro-, ˌtrichloracetˈaldehyde = chloral.

Add: Before a vowel, trichlor-. ˌtrichloroˈphenol [ad. G. Trichlorphenol (A. Faust 1867, in Zeitschr. f. Chem. III. 729)], any of six chlorinated derivatives of phenol having the formula C6H2Cl3(OH) , used as fungicidal and preservative agents and in the manufacture of various pesticides.
1871Jrnl. Chem. Soc. IX. 1121 Faust obtained this compound [sc. dichloroquinone] by oxidation of *trichlorophenol by nitric acid. 1919Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. XLI. 2032 Phenol sulfonic acid on treatment with chlorine forms 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, the sulfonic groups being detached. This 2,4,6-trichlorophenol is also formed by passing chlorine into phenol. 1941Proc. Soc. Exper. Biol. & Med.
