Skewes Math.|ˈskjuːɪz, skjuːz|
The name of S. Skewes (b. 1899), South African born mathematician, used attrib. and in the possessive to designate an extremely large number, relevant in the theory of the distribution of prime numbers, having the value exp(exp (exp 79)).
The first pronunc. is that used by the Skewes family.
In 1933 (Jrnl. London Math. Soc. VIII. 277) Skewes claimed that, for some value of a less than this number, the number of primes less than a exceeds ∫ a / 0 dx/ln x.
