[mod.L., on type of a Gr. *κοκκίδιον, dim. of κοκκίς, -ιδ-, dim. of κόκκος grain, berry.]
1. Bot. A spherical or hemispherical conceptacle found in the rhodospermous algæ.
1867J. Hogg Microsc. ii. i. 274 Coccidium either occurs on lateral branches or is sessile on the face of the frond. 1876Harley Mat. Med. 361 Fructification in hemispherical sessile coccidia, containing oblong spores on a central axis.
2. Zool. Formerly the name of a genus of protozoan internal parasites; now a parasite of this kind belonging to the order Coccidia, which causes disease in mammals and birds.
