The names of Carl Ludwig Schotten (1853–1910) and Eugen Baumann (1846–96), German chemists, used attrib. (esp. as Schotten–Baumann method, Schotten–Baumann reaction) and occas. in the possessive with reference to a type of reaction in which a primary or secondary amine reacts with an acid halide in basic aqueous solution to form an amide; also used with reference to analogous reactions involving primary and secondary alcohols.
