combining form of Gr. σύµβολον symbol n.1, as in symbolo-fideism |ˌsɪmbələʊˈfaɪdiːɪz(ə)m| [F. symbolo-fidéisme], the theory that symbols are of the essence of religious dogma, and that the attitude of faith has priority over intellectual belief (see quot. 1921); hence ˌsymbolo-ˈfideist, one who holds this theory; ˌsymboloˈmania nonce-wd., excessive use of symbols.
