[f. phosphor-us + L. -ēscĕre, formative of inceptive vbs.: perh. inferred from phosphorescent, found earlier.]
intr. To emit luminosity without combustion (or by gentle combustion without sensible heat); to exhibit phosphorescence: to shine in the dark.
