[a. G. schofel worthless stuff, rubbish (primarily Yiddish, and thence adopted in London slang, though it has long been in ordinary German use), subst. use of G. schofel base, mean, worthless, repr. the German-Jewish pronunciation of Heb. shāphēl low.]
1. Counterfeit money. Also attrib. or adj., counterfeit. Comb. shoful-man, -pitcher, one who passes counterfeit coin; so shoful-pitching.
