Loddon|ˈlɒdən|
The name of a tributary of the River Thames, used attrib., esp. in Loddon lily, to designate the summer snowflake, Leucojum æstivum, a small, white-flowered, bulbous plant once common on the banks of this river.
1882Dickens's Dict. Thames 28/3 It [sc. the summer snowflake] is very abundant in the meadows by the Loddon, and hence called ‘Loddon lilies’. 1938R. Gathorne-Hardy Wild Flowers Brit. viii. 53 The Loddon Lily is to be found principally on the tributaries and main river of the Thames Valley. 1971Country Life 2 Sept. 575/1 On the banks of the River Loddon linger a few 2 ft.-high clumps of the snowy-white Loddon lily, or summer snowflake, Leucojum aestivum. 1973Times 15 Dec. 10/7 The Loddon or Summer Snowflake Leucojum aestivum used to grow in great numbers on the banks of the Loddon near Reading.
