[a. Heb. pidyōn habēn redemption of the son.]
A Jewish ceremony performed thirty days after the birth of a first-born male child in which the child is redeemed from being given over nominally to the service of the priesthood; = redemption n. 2 b.
The ceremony is based upon Exodus xiii. 2–16 and Numb. xviii. 15, and is not required if either parent is a Cohen or a Levite.
