lit. ‘hand-pledge’ or security; according to Spelman, Cowell, and their copiers, a name for one (or each) of the nine sureties associated with the headborow in a frank-pledge.
(It does not appear where the 16th c. antiquaries got the word, no trace of which has been found in OE. or ME.)
