[ad. G. idiozom (F. Meves 1896, in Anat. Hefte (Abt. 2) VI. 315), f. idio- + Gr. ζῶµ-α loin-cloth, band, girdle.]
A rounded structure present in the cytoplasm of developing germ cells in members of most animal groups, in certain of which it forms part of (or is associated with) the Golgi apparatus in spermatids and spermatocytes and develops into the acrosome of the spermatozoon.

XII. 14 At the pointed end of the cell lies a spherical or oval body, homogeneous in appearance, which is stained more deeply by the action of Hermann's fixative than the enveloping cytoplasm... Meves..proposes for it the name ‘Idiozom’, which I shall adopt in the present paper... In the idiozome of the resting spermatogonium I have been unable to detect any granules which could be regarded as centrosomes. 1920L. Doncaster Introd.
