A point or dot placed within a Hebrew letter, denoting either that it is doubled (dagesh forte), or that it is not aspirated (dagesh lene).
1591Percivall Sp. Dict. B j, B..very often..is sounded like the Hebrew {hebbeth} when it is in the middest of a word without daggesh.1749B. Martin Dict. Introd. Eng. Tongue 9 If any of the aspirated letters has the point (call'd Dagesh) in them, they are then pronounced without the H.1834A. Willis Hebr. Gram. 5 A point is sometimes inserted in the middle of a consonant affecting the pronunciation, and called Dagesh or Mappik.
