A skin disease affecting certain white-skinned animals, caused by poisoning by buckwheat and subsequent exposure to sunlight.
1909in Webster.1909Johns Hopkins Hospital Bull. XX. 153/2 Dr. Smith said fagopyrismus was derived from Latin fagus, beech-tree, and Greek pyros, wheat, and meant poisoning from the buckwheat. The condition is not uncommon in pigs, swine, horses..which eat the grains, plant, straw, or stubble of the buckwheat. White or spotted animals are especially susceptible, and the disease is moderated by shelter or a cloudy sky.1917E. A. Bruce in Jrnl. Amer. Vet. Med. Assoc.
