A member of the genus of liliaceous plants from Japan once so named, but now called Hosta, having racemes of drooping white or lilac bell-shaped flowers; a plantain-lily.
1839Curtis's Bot. Mag. LXV. 3657 This interesting species of Funckia was received from Belgium.
1883W. Robinson Eng. Flower Garden 132/2 The bold and striking foliage of some of the strongest plain-leaved section of Funkias renders them very effective as edging plants for large beds. 1927E. H. Garden v. 78 Funkias, or Plantain Lilies, are among the best foliage plants of the herbaceous border. 1970Countryman LXXV. 291 We tend to think of hostas as recent introductions, but this variety [sc.
